Pieces of Me
"Pieces of Me" is an autobiographical play that delves into the profound impact of apartheid-era racial segregation on one family and society at large. It explores the hidden truths and lasting scars left by a brutal system of racial injustice.

My father secretly passed as a white man during the apartheid years. He lived the rest of his life as a white man, keeping his secret until his death. Had it been discovered, he would have faced a decade in prison, his marriage would have been annulled, and my siblings and I would have been taken from our family and placed in state care. This play unpacks the deep emotional consequences of his decision and how it shaped my own life.

As a professional South African actor now living in the United States, I have written a series of personal stories about the emotional complexities of growing up with this father who was living a double life. These stories capture universal themes of exclusion, fear, and silence—experiences felt by marginalized communities around the world. While deeply rooted in the traumas and legacies of apartheid, these narratives are also life-affirming and inspiring, offering a powerful exploration of resilience and the human spirit.
“No one ever talks about the moment you
found that you were white. Or the moment
you found out you were black. That’s a
profound revelation. The minute you find
that out, something happens. You have to
renegotiate everything.” - TONI MORRISON
This is my re-negotiation.
