Gaukurinn is a bar and live venue at Blöndalshús on Tryggvagata in downtown Reykjavík. Gaukur á Stöng opened it’s doors on the 19th of November 1983. Beer wasn’t legal at the time but “Bjórlíki” was popular at the time. “Bjórlíki” was a drink with non alcoholic pilsner and a shot of vodka in it. In May 1988, the Althing passed legislation legalising beer. The first legal draft beer was sold at “Gaukur á Stöng” which is now Gaukurinn.
Since then Gaukurinn has been a stable in the Icelandic music scene, where many of Iceland’s biggest artists started out. In more recent years Gaukurinn has established it self as a safe haven for the queer/alternative/drag and other artists in Iceland.
We are an artistic space where everybody is welcome
